Terms of Service

Welcome to Chess Sandbox ("the Service"), operated at chesssandbox.com and mobile.chesssandbox.com. By accessing or using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms.

1. Use of the Service

Chess Sandbox is a free, browser-based chess tool for personal, non-commercial use.

Prohibited Conduct

Attempting to exploit, hack, or disrupt the Service
Using automated scripts, bots, or scrapers
Harassing, threatening, or abusing other users
Sending hate speech, slurs, or discriminatory content
Impersonating other users or staff
Attempting to circumvent bans

2. Online Battle & Discord Login

The Online Battle feature requires authentication via Discord. We access your Discord username, user ID, and avatar for identification within games.

Your Discord display name and avatar are visible to other players in shared game rooms.

Chat Moderation

All chat messages are screened by our moderation system. Messages containing prohibited content will be blocked.

ELO Rating

New players start at 1000 ELO. Winning awards +15 ELO; losing deducts 15 ELO.

3. Intellectual Property

All original content, design, code, and branding are the property of Chess Sandbox. Chess piece graphics are sourced from Wikimedia Commons.

4. Termination & Bans

We reserve the right to suspend or permanently ban any user who violates these Terms.

5. Disclaimer of Warranties

The Service is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind.

6. Limitation of Liability

Chess Sandbox shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages.

7. Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms at any time.

Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what information Chess Sandbox collects and how it is used.

1. Information We Collect

Discord OAuth Data

When you log in via Discord, we receive and store: Discord user ID, username, display name, and avatar.

Game Data

Game state information (board positions, move history, chat messages, ELO ratings) is stored in Firebase Realtime Database.

Local Storage

Your Discord OAuth access token is stored in your browser's local storage.

2. Third-Party Services

Discord

Authentication is handled by Discord. Their Privacy Policy applies.

Firebase (Google)

Game data is stored using Firebase. Google's Privacy Policy applies.

Cloudflare Workers

Write operations are routed through Cloudflare. Their Privacy Policy applies.

3. Data Retention

Game room data may persist indefinitely unless manually cleared.

4. Your Rights

You may request access, correction, or deletion of your data via our Discord server.

5. Children's Privacy

The Service is not directed at children under 13.

Cookie Policy

Chess Sandbox primarily uses browser localStorage rather than traditional cookies.

What We Store

When you log in with Discord, we store your OAuth token and expiry time in localStorage. These are necessary for the Online Battle feature.

Third-Party Cookies

Google Fonts, Firebase, and Discord may set their own cookies during use.

No Tracking

Chess Sandbox does not use tracking or advertising cookies.
